Wailea/Makena Beach area
Wailea and Makena are quite different,
although they
are neighboring communities. Wailea is basically a "bedroom community" of high
priced
condos, townhouses and homes, some lavish Hotels and a few expensive
restaurants thrown in. It has a beautiful beach, but finding access
to it can be a challenge. Look for small signs on the beach side
indicating walkways to the public beach, usually with secluded
parking lots across the street.
Makena is a belt shaped community
of intermittant beach
homes, stretching South along Maui's coast. Beautiful views, beaches
and snorkling areas await you there. Mekena essentially follows the old King's
highway, which was the old stone road used by the ancient Hawaiian's
for traveling around the island. You can still see parts of it at the
end of the paved road past Makena.
