Kahului
and airport area
Kahului
is the most city-like location in Maui with
shopping centers, super markets, Costo, K-Mart and a little bit of
everything else. Quite a few cultural activities take place here as
well and it is the home of Maui Community College.
A
little known beach is right next to the airport,
that I call "tin can" beach because of the trash that can accumulate
on the Eastern undeveloped part near downtown Kahului, but the West
end near the airport is quite nice, and a popular wind surfing area.
It's real name is Kanaha Beach, and to get to it, maybe take a dip
while waiting for your plane, just go the opposite way from the
Rental Car area on Kaa Street than you normally would to get to
Kahului, and it's just at the end to the right.
Next
door is Wailuku, the historical seat of
government for Maui at one time, and is still where you find most of
the government services offices, including the DMV. It's a funky old
place, seemingly not sure if it wants to grow or be left
alone...
See
the Detailed
Map page for specifics of what's there.
