Transurethral Resection of the Prostate
Tips for
TURP
This
information is not intended to be a substitute for medical advice or
treatment of prostate problems. If you suspect prostate problems,
contact your health care provider.
(*Have
whomever is going to support you during your
postop
recovery, read this before your
operation)
Tips
for before the operation:
- Select a doctor with
lots of experience with TURP, and don't be afraid to
ask
around about his success rate/ patient satisfaction.
- Stock-up on good
foods and drinks
- Buy a mild natural
bulk-forming laxative
- Buy or make something
for tube leakage
- Catch-up on
correspondence and bill paying
- Wear sweats-type
casual clothes to the operation
- Schedule
friends/family to help you for several days
- Schedule yourself off
work completely for a week
- Get as much sleep as
possible the night before
- Try not to be
constipated before surgery -- it will help later
Tips
for when you first get home:
- Wear old clothes that
are easy to get in & out of, and are comfortable (like sweats)
- Start drinking
liquids and have some near your bed
- Flush catether only
as necessary, take your spasm medicine as it will prevent drainage
problems
- Decreasingly, expect
both blood and tissue to be voided
- Wrap where the
catether goes in the penis with soft paper or use a male incontinence
product, for leakage
- Expect the catether
to be for about 72 hours
- May want to coat head
of penis with an anesthetic ointment like Xylocaine for soreness
- While the "damn tube"
is in, keep movement to a minimum to avoid: soreness, leaks and the
potential of "stepping on the tube", which believe me you will only do
once!
- Have phone numbers
for post-op help handy
- Relax, and help your
body recover
Recovery
Period Tips:
- No
alcoholic beverages or smoking
- If a
postop visiting nurse program is available, use it!
- Take
a nap anytime you feel tired - DO NOT PUSH YOURSELF!
- Expect
to be away from work for at least 2 weeks
- When
first mobile, you may want to wear briefs, for comfort and potential
leakage (consider incontinence pads)
No
sex for approx. 8 weeks (see FAQ's)
- Don't
drive a car or ride for long distances
- If
you sit for any length of time, use cushions for comfort
- Keep
domestic activities to a minimum and no lifting
- Check
your temperature every so often
- Practice
good hygiene to avoid infections, this means keeping hands and penis
clean
- Continue
to drink lots of liquids to flush you out
- You
may need to "retrain" your bladder (see FAQ's)
- Don't
make any important legal / life decisions
- Have patience and keep a good
attitude ...
Chill
Out!
