Kohala
area
This
is the Northern part of the Island, above the
Kona Coast and Mauna Kea. It includes some very
old Hawaiian towns, some of the most extravagant and expensive beach
hotels in the world, immense stretches of uninhabited beaches, the
home of King Kamehameha, cattle, sheep and horse ranches, and the end
of the road (Hwy 270) at expansive Pololu Valley.
Almost
all the grand hotels along the Kohala coast
are either open to non-guests or have coastal access privilege areas
within their grounds, so don't be afraid to pull into those
intimidating entrances and ask.
The
Parker Ranch area is like Northern California,
with it's rolling hills of golden grass, herds
of cattle and tree-lined country roads. Don't be surprised to see a
rodeo or horse competition going on.
Many
Heiaus (Hawaiian
cerimonial sites) are in this area, especially along the Western
Kohala coast. These sites have very violent and ominous histories
that may surprise, if not shock you.
