Hilo
area
Hilo
is very different from Kailua-Kona in several
ways. It is on the windward, rainy side, so it therefore rains often
and is very lush, with many botanical gardens and waterfalls to
visit.
The
town is much
older and quaint than modern Kailua - more like old
Hawaii. There are many large garden areas along the Hilo shore due to
numerous tidal waves wiping-out the town there. Eventually the city
fathers got the drift and decided to curtail building in that area.
You
can take a bus (#7) to Hilo from the top of
Palisades hill at the store/gas station at 6:55am for $5.25. You get
to downtown Hilo (old train station on the harbor) at 9:45am. Good
luck.
