I probably should not be giving anyone
kayaking tips as I am a novice that did not do his homework before
starting the sport. Yet I have through trial and error (heavy
on the error) learned a few things that seem important, at
least to me. Probably in any book about learning kayaking,
and surely "da" to experienced kayakers, but at least it may help
someone else like me. Anyone who has tips to add just send
me .
You should always keep
one eye on the incoming waves
If in doubt about a wave
-- take it head on paddling
carrying a short length
of garden hose can be used at most landings to wash the salt water off
your boat
ALWAYS keep paper items
in separate zip-lock bags
carrying an oily rag can
be good for salvaging your camera if it gets wet
carry extra connectors
of differing sizes in case one breaks
anything in containers
that are vunerable to water should be in there own
water-resistant/tight containers
crimp one end of any
bungie cords attached to a cleat so you don't lose them
having a small anchor
can allow you to snorkle without worrying about your boat drifting off
or having to shore it
ALWAYS keep things tied
down when out to sea
if you have an anchor,
drop it in sand so you don't have to dive after it later when it
attaches to coral
when strapping your
kayak to your vehicle -- do more than you think you need -- never less
time your ocean entrance
to bays to after a wave set
have extra small cleats
installed on the inner side of dugout
clear silicon glue seems
to work well at filling scraps in the hull
