How
do I turn on the Windows XP Fire
Wall?
Windows XP Home and Pro come with a Microsoft® provided Fire
Wall
program. It is not held in high regard for its level of
protection, but it is better to use than not have any Fire
Wall
running.
To quickly check if the Fire
Wall
is being used with your Network
Connections do the following:
1) Go to your Control
Panel (e.g. Start/Setting/Control Panel)
2) Click on Network Connections
3) You will see all your available Network Connection methods
4) High-light the one you want to check by single right clicking
on it
5) Select Properties from the menu,
and then at the top select the Advanced
tab
6) At the top is the Internet Connection
Firewall box -- make sure the white box within is checked.
If not, then check it with a left click
(see below)
7) Click OK and walk your
way out
of the created windows
When you create your network connections via the Network Connect Wizard (Start/Programs/Accessories/Communications/New
Network Connection Wizard), it will ask you if you want
to use the XP Fire
Wall
with the connection.
To make sure the the XP Fire
Wall
program is actually running on your system do the following:
1) Go
to your Control Panel
again
2) Open Administrative Tools
3) Open
Services
4) Stroll down the system services to Internet
Connection Firewall (ICF)
5) Under the Status column it
should say Started and under Startup Type it should be Automatic
6) If not, then right click on Internet
Connection Firewall & select Properties
7) In the middle of the window after Startup
Type click the ▽ arrow and select Automatic.
Then under that click the Start option
button
8) Click OK and backout of the
windows you created
