Guy's ART

For the Love of Life and Colour

"Wishums" is a joint co-operative effort between two artists:  Elinor Vear and myself.  We have decided to take our art on to a decorative and three dimensioanl medium:  used chairs.

Chairs that have had their day and need new life are salvaged, and then painted, decorated, or modified and added to in order to create a new work of art.  The form and design of the chair provides the inspiration as to how it will be painted.   The theme of the work is also decided in this way.  If the chair needs repairs, this is done first.   Only the most necessary repairs are made.  Much of the original nicks, bruises and scratches are left to allow the piece to tell its own tale.  Some chairs are modified in structure and some may be designed and built from scratch.

This all results in a variety of unique, fanciful and colourful centerpieces that can add a bright and cheery spirit to any home.

cndy.jpg (33484 bytes) The spindles provided inspiration for a colourful candy theme and jellybeans were painted on the top. farm.jpg (21722 bytes)This chair was purchased by a zoo gift shop in Toronto.  They have farm animals there so it was a good fit. martins.jpg (40405 bytes)A friend of mine has a son that is a professional musician.  They brought over a chair and commisioned me to paint something with a musical theme.  He plays a variety of instruments, and that has been reflected in the theme.  jens.jpg (47107 bytes)This chair has a teacher's theme.   I carved out a hole in the back to insert a small brass bell that actually rings.  The two outer spindles were carved out to look like pencils.

wfrg1.jpg (25123 bytes)This is one of a pair of chairs that  was provided to me to paint and donate  for a "Chair-ity" auction.   I decided to make them look similar but not exactly the same.  This one includes frogs on the back. bulrush.jpg (68897 bytes)This is the other of a pair of chairs that  was provided to me to paint and donate  for a "Chair-ity" auction.    This one has a birch bark theme on the spindles.   frog2.jpg (30823 bytes)This chair was in pieces about to be abondened by the side of the road. I reassembled and glued it.  The back side was a nutural for a guantlet of frogs. wvchair.jpg (37164 bytes)This is called "Vincents" chair because it is based on a painting by Vincent Van Gogh of his room in Arles.   I designed the chair with exagerated perspective and then carved and assembled it. The leg closest to us is actually 1/3 longer and larger than the other front leg.

DDdeliverchair.jpg (44501 bytes)This chair is based on a painting that I had done in the past.    levi.jpg (35225 bytes)Because of the way that the sides were fastened to the top, I was reminded of the rivets on blue jeans.  I painted a great big closeup of a Levis rivet on the top.     sunfltable.jpg (49237 bytes)The mosaic on this end table was painted on.  I like the look of mosaics and after all that work painting it, I wondered if it might have been easier to actully use real mosaics.  Oh well... good thing that I do enjoy painting.   P2410w.jpg (44121 bytes)
