Subject: I attended Faire in garb yesterday (long delurk)

I was out to the Ohio Renassaince Faire yesterday in female clothes. It is a wonderful thing to do. Most of the time I participate in the Society for Creative Anachronisms. There is a support group for GLBT medievil reenactors known as Clan Bluefeather www.bluefeather.com/

Hi and Welcome to AFR!

I'm glad you've finally crawled down from the lurkers loft to post. This is a pretty nice, if eclectic, group of people. I'm happy to say there are many here I enjoy trading posts with, and a few that have become good friends off line in real life.

It sounds like you really enjoyed your time at faire yesterday. What a great experience. I'm glad you were treated with the courtesy and respect you deserve. I'm afraid I can't help direct you in expanding your role within faire out in Kansas. I perform and attend faires in CA, and I don't have a clue how they work things out there. I can give you the link to the wenches guild, however. It's a fun, bawdy group of people. It's a social guild. Good luck with your search, and enjoy!

>So what to be? That is now the question.

be yourself.

From what you've said, you dress in mundane drag quite often, yet you sport the beard. It doesn't sound like you are trying to "pass" as a woman. So doing drag in period garb shouldn't really be any different.

However, if you are looking for some sort of explaination for why you are dressed as you are, my first suggestion would be to use a variation of however you normally respond to questions when dressed in 'everyday' drag.

If you're trying to create a persona or do the faire as more of a playtron, a few popped into my head. First, you could be dressed in ladies' clothing because your house burned down, are wearing your sister/wife/maid's clothes while you shop for new clothes here at the faire. Or, you're dressed like that because you were sporting with a Lord's fair maiden and her jealousy husband came home. You donned the first thing at hand and escaped thru an open window, him hot on your heels. (don't know whether this would work, based on your sexual preferences). Let's see... if asked about your beard, you could gasp in shock, look offended and cry "Beard? What beard? I'll have you know this is the latest in facial warmers. It's all the rage amongst the ladies in court in France!" Or, as you suggested, you could claim to be a player at the theater. Again, if the beard is commented upon, you could look rather puzzled and exclaim "Zounds! Now I know why the audience laughs and hisses when I appear as the fair Juliet." Perhaps you lost a bet to a friend and must wear his sister's clothing for a week. Maybe you are an escaped criminal, hiding in those clothes before the medevial/Renaissance equivilant of the sheriff finds you.

Okay, before this becomes a book, I will stop here. You see, the possibilities for a persona based explaination are endless. Now if only I could figure out my OWN persona as easily as I can spitball ideas for others.

But I like the women's outfits more, maybe because of the way I have been with female clothes for years, maybe because they are a wee bit more comfortable. I could wear kilts, but I hate scratchy wool; I'd have to wear a non-period nylon slip under one. No, it was just plain more fun in Elizabethan drag today; anything else will be a letdown from now on.

Then that's what you should wear. Have fun, and make a faire persona out of it! Make a back story, and enjoy!

My universal answer for all occasions is, because I like to. If they ask further, I'll mention the comfort, both the coolness in hot weather and the warmth in cold (yes, it does work both ways), the lack of anything tight around my waist, the greater variety in colors and patterns available, the extremely positive reactions I sometimes get, etc. etc.

These are the two best. I want it to be that I am doing it deliberately and proudly, not mistakenly or shamefully.

ah... And this is why I'm a rennie. My cousin and I were just discussing that this weekend as we realized that we've been to no shows at all this season (except 2 that I took one of our afr'ers to, and this was our 3rd week into the season), and we just make our rounds saying hi to all of our friends, then head down to the pottery shop to spin wool and read (and sometimes in her case- to play with her new tarot deck), and then up to the pub for a bit of wine and to talk. All things that we could be doing outside of faire.... And yet can't bring ourselves to miss a single day. Faire is home, and family, and I wouldn't miss a minute of it. :)

snip the rest

Welcome to our addiction. :) Once you've garbed, you'll never go back. I personally love to see men running around in women's clothes- so this post makes me particularly happy. :) Not to mention that your particular set of garb sounds right cute! I definitely do think that the whole "I'm an actor bit" is the perfect excuse for having a beard (and anything else that people are curious about)- actor's get away with anything and everything without being questioned too deeply. :) Ok, I'm half asleep (long day with the niece and nephew) so I won't ramble anymore... but "well come" and "huzzah"!

This becomes interesting - I suspect that the knot must have a more standard name, because the only rose knots I know are tied with a minimum of four lines, and would not be very useful as a clothing tie (would take too long to tie and untie).

If you do find a picture of the knot, I'd like to see a copy!

Hi Bill,

Dani again. Visit www.wench.org and see if that sounds good to you. You can read up on the other social guilds (Rogue's Guild, Mercenaries Guild and more) at www.lundegaard.com

There are a few Local chapters of the Wench's Guild out there.....and it depends on what your home faire is. I know you attended KCRF, but is that your home faire?

Butterfly Bill,

Congratulations! Hope you enjoy your garb & continue having a great time. Cross dressing at faire, both by CD & TS, is not that uncommon. I've seen a few at TRF/Hawkwood/Scarby over the years. Heck, I even sewed a corset for a male friend for faire. You are sooo right about having difficulty with a corset designed for a woman fitting on a GM. (Do a search for Axfords--beautiful corsets, even for men, made in England. Lovely!) Most other costumed people will not even look askance at you. I venture to say that if anyone does, you'll probably have a dozen sword carrying blokes ready to defend your honor. And half will probably be female! :-)

I'll reply to both groups, what the heck. Not that I even lurk on AFC.....

Butterfly Bill wrote (with much snippage for brevity):

I have been lurking for a few years, but have never felt I had much to say, not being a vendor or performer or any more of a participant than a once a season patron. But I still read this group because it is one of the most delightfully flame-free groups I have read, and it quite possibly has more posts beginning with OT than any other outside of alt.fashion. (It also has not possibly but definitely the longest sig files in Usenetdom.) I like the way you treat each other and the easy way you share your feelings, and I feel this same vibe interacting with you all in real (Faire) life.

Welcome to un-lurk-dom. Hope you "come out" more often (pun intended, of course). :-)

> Well, I finally attended Faire in garb yesterday - but not in a way most people do it. As my name implies, I am male, my height is six feet even, and I have a construction workers physique. But today at the Kansas City Faire I finally did what I had been wanting to do for the last four years, and now was at a moment when I had the money to do it, even if it was crazy by all my otherwise normal standards. I went into Heart's Delight and spent $200 and change on a complete peasant class woman's outfit - lavender chemise, aqua blue underskirt, bodice in a delicate pink rose pattern on a blue and teal background, and a muffin cap in a darker lavender.

And it looked nice and you wore it well.

> While being fitted for the bodice, another woman customer in the store asked me if I had boobs, and I answered no, but I've got pectorals. The saleslady went on to add about how there is still a fleshy part to them that can be formed, all in a matter of fact tone like I was not the first male customer she had served.

You're not. No doubt about it.

> I am a totally out cross dresser in the mundane world, and I go about town on normal errands in skirts and dresses, and I had been coming to the KC Faire in mundane drag for a few years. (I've been immune to any comedy act that would drag me onto stage and make me put on pink tutus or such while the rest of the audience jeered.) I was in an ultramodern mundane red tank top and ankle length rayon dress when I first came thru the gate.

And that looked nice. My bandmate liked the beadwork at the neckline on that.

> I was encouraged earlier in the morning by the example of the hammered dulcimer player for Minstrosity, who performed in an Irish woman's outfit with a green bodice and a plaid shawl over his shoulder. (Probably I should say her, I gathered from the liner notes of their CD that this person is transexual and transitioned.)

Irish? Well, OK, I guess, but I'm actually half-Scot, and the plaid was the Campbell of Argyll tartan. And granted I was wearing a leine, which is more associated with Irish. But the plaid was worn in the style of a Scots arisade.

Yes, I am the hammered dulcimer player (and bowed psaltery, and recorders - oh, yeah, and I sing, too). I am indeed an out, transitioned transsexual (pre-op) and prefer female pronouns. Thank you for noticing, though. At this point, many don't notice I used to be male.

And for anyone taking bets as to when I took off the arisade, whoever put money on "not until after closing gate" wins. :-)

Again, welcome to the madness that is AFR. I don't have the address for the AFR FAQ handy, but it keeps popping up, so keep your eyes peeled.

And for those on AFC, here's one of those long sig files Bill mentioned. And I have to tell you that a few months ago, I cut this down by about half......

Butterfly Bill,

I didn't reply earlier because I was at Northern for 3day. Welcome to our little home away from home. One of the things I love about this group and it's people is that they except everyone, with a smile and a hug. I love these people, they are great. Welcome.

I am joyfully overwhelmed by all the loving replies that I got to my first post, and I want to thank you all, including those who emailed me privately with answers to the beard "problem". I'll say again that this is the most affectionate and flame free newsgroup I have ever read.

I especially want to thank those of you who sent your post also to alt.fashion.crossdressing. Many who post there, and I'm sure many more lurkers, are deep in the closet - and those of us who are out are repeatedly trying to tell them that they can come out and just do it, that they don't have to pass (CD talk for disguising yourself so well that everyone thinks you're really a woman). We try to relate our own experiences of being out, but I suspect that many of the closeted don't really believe us. The unmistaken and unsolicited testimony of so many of you (especially comments like Hellen Yrth's "I personally love to see men running around in women's clothes- so this post makes me particularly happy. :)" ) I'm sure helped our cause well.

Josephine, is your band doing the whole run of KCRF? And are you a Madame, and can you find the two others I need to become a wench?

Yes.

I am a Madame (sez so in the sigfile). Can I find the two others? I know that Wendy (yes, my bandmate) is a Madame cum Laude (the highest rank), but you will have to ask her yourself. Can I find another one? No.

You see, rank depends more on how many years of Faire you have under your belt than how long you've been a member of IWG. I've not been a member that long, but this is my eighth year of Faire. And I don't know the ranking of the other Wenches at KCRF.

Bill,

Actually....if you are in KC, you would belong to one Local, but you mentioned living in NC, so that would be different. I'll write up that email to you today.

Thanks!

Normally I am very wary of cross postings, but this one is inspired, and inspirational. Many thanks, Bill, for originality of subject and an interesting post. Perhaps it will encourage more trannies to get out and about in a safe and accepting environment. I'm sorry I'm the wrong side of the Atlantic and cannot attend. :-( Still I am accepted for being me by friends :-)
